Billund

Billund
[BLL/EKBI]

Located 1.9 km northeast of Billund, it serves as one of the country's busiest air cargo centres, as well as a charter airline destination.

Billund Airport had its beginning in 1961 when the son of the founder of the Lego Group, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, established a private 800-meter long runway and hangar north of his factory in Billund. With Christiansen as a key driver, more of the neighbouring municipalities were included in the group of owners, and it was planned that the airport should be expanded to a regular public airport. The construction of the new airport was carried out during 1964 and the airport opened on 1 November, with one runway at 1660 meters in length.

Karup

Karup airport, today Midtjylland airport
[KRP/EKKA]

Midtjyllands Airport, formerly known as Karup Airport, is situated 3 km west of the town of Karup and carries passengers primarily from nine municipalities in mid and west Jutland that also own the airport.

The airport is based on a military airfield constructed during the German occupation in 1940. After the war, the Royal Danish Air Force took control of the field which is still its main base.

At the request of some middle- and west-Jutland politicians, the airport was opened on 1 November 1965 when the first direct connection between Karup and Copenhagen was opened. In 1968 the airport's first terminal was built. Until then, it had rented premises at the airbase.

Köpenhamn (Copenhagen)-Kastrup

Copenhagen-Kastrup airport
[CPH/EKCH]

Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup, is the main international airport serving Copenhagen, Denmark, the rest of Zealand, the Øresund Region, and a large part of southern Sweden including Scania. It is the largest airport in the Nordic countries and one of the oldest international airports in Europe.

The airport is located on the island of Amager, 8 kilometres south of Copenhagen city centre, and 24 kilometres west of Malmö city centre, which is connected to Copenhagen via the Øresund Bridge.

The airport was inaugurated 20 April 1925 and was one of the first civil airports in the world. It consisted of a large, impressive terminal built of wood, a couple of hangars, a balloon mast, a hydroplane landing stage and a few grassy meadows that could be used as runways.

In the years of World War II, the Copenhagen airport was closed for civil operations except for periodic flights to destinations in Sweden, Germany, and Austria. In the summer of 1941 the first hard-surface runway opened. It was 1,400 metres long and 65 metres wide.
When World War II ended in May 1945, Copenhagen had the most modern international airport in Europe, because the airport remained untouched by actual acts of war.

With the foundation of SAS, traffic increased a lot during the last years of the 1940s. The terminal was expanded several times and new hangars were erected.

Expansion has then continued over the years (please read more on wikipedia).
